Morehead State Runs Out of Answers, Lady Colonels Knock Off Rival, 79-58

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University's women's basketball team used a late 15-4 run to finally put away in-state and Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State, 79-58, on Saturday at Johnson Arena.

It is EKU's fourth consecutive win over Morehead State and second straight win over its rival in Morehead.

EKU (9-6, 3-1 OVC) led by 15 twice but each time the Eagles answered. MSU closed a first half 15-point deficit to three and cut a second half 15-point deficit to two before the Lady Colonels finally pulled away.

A basket by Morehead State's Shanice Parker with 10:46 left in the game capped a 16-4 run that drew the home team to within two, 52-50. Eastern Kentucky answered with a 15-4 run to finally put the game away. Marie Carpenter scored five and Shelly Harper had six. Harper's two free throws and basket it polished off the run and put EKU in front 67-54 with 5:33 left to play.

The Eagles (8-8, 2-1 OVC) never got closer than 11 the rest of the way. Eastern ended the game on a 12-2 run.

Carpenter had a game-best 25 points. She hit 7-of-15 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Harper finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

EKU shot 56 percent from the field while MSU made just 33 percent of its shots.

Terrice Robinson led the Eagles with 22 points.

The Lady Colonels took control early in the game. With the score tied 8-8, Eastern went on an 18-3 run while Morehead State began the game 3-of-15 from the field and turned the ball over nine times through the first 12 minutes. Six different players scored during the run with Michaela Hunter accounting for six points. Carpenter's basket and free throw at the 8:11 mark capped it and gave the visitors a 26-11 lead.

The Eagles answered with a 16-4 run of their own. MSU connected on three 3-pointers and scored five at the free throw line. Taybreanna Couch's free throw with 3:39 left in the first half cut the deficit to three, 30-27.

EKU ended the first half by scoring six unanswered as Morehead State went the final 2:01 without scoring. Eastern led 38-29 at the break.

Nine different players scored in the first half for EKU. The Colonels shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the field. Five of Morehead State's eight field goals were from three-point range. The Eagles made just 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from the field in the opening half.

Eastern Kentucky scored the first six points of the second half to stretch its run to 12-0 and go back in front by 15 points, 44-29. Carpenter scored four of the six.

The Lady Colonels will host Jacksonville State on Saturday. Tipoff at McBrayer Arena is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
