EKU Comes From Behind To Beat Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Morehead State, 3-2, on Wednesday.  It was the Colonels first win in Morehead since 2006.
 
Eastern won by scores of 21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20 and 15-7. 
 
The Colonels are now 13-6 overall and 3-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play.  It's their best conference start since beginning the 2005 season with three straight victories.  EKU went on to finish as Co-OVC Champions that season.

The loss snapped an 18-game regular season home court winning streak against conference teams for Morehead State.
 
Senior setter Abbey Cvelbar finished with a triple-double for Eastern.  She had 10 kills, 47 assists and 10 digs.  Cvelbar made only two errors for a .320 attack percentage.  Alexis Plagens had a match-best 14 kills to go along with 16 digs.  Celina Sanks and Rachel Vick each had 13 kills.  Vick made just three errors for a .417 attack percentage.
 
Eastern's Dena Ott led all players with 28 digs.
 
After making 21 attack errors in the first three sets, Eastern Kentucky had only six errors in the final two.  The Colonels hit .353 in the fourth and .429 in the fifth.
 
Trailing 2-0 and tied 14-14 in the third set, EKU went on an 8-1 run to go in front by seven.  Back-to-back errors by Morehead State ended the set 25-18 and got the visitors on the board.  The Colonels were up only three, 22-19, late in the fourth set before kills by Cvelbar and Vick gave Eastern set-point.  Sanks finished it off moments later, 25-20, and tied the match 2-2.
 
Eastern Kentucky scored six of the first seven points in the decisive fifth set and never trailed.  The Colonels scored the final four points of the match.  Plagens got it going with a kill.  Vick followed with a pair of kills before Plagens finished it off with an ace.
 
EKU finished with five more kills (62-57) but had seven more errors.  Despite hitting so well over the final two sets, the Colonels were actually out-hit .224 to .207 for the match.  The Eagles had an 11-4 advantage in blocks, but committed eight more service errors. 
 
Morehead State is winless in 2014, 0-16, including an 0-3 mark in league games.
 
Eastern will be back in action at Murray State on Saturday.  That match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
