JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Two Colonels recorded 20 or more kills but it wasn't enough as the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team lost 3-2 at Jacksonville State on Saturday. The final three sets of the match were decided by the minimum six points.
JSU won the first two sets by scores of 25-20. EKU took the second two sets by scores of 31-29 and 25-23. The Gamecocks won the decisive third set 16-14.
Alexis Plagens finished with 27 kills, 18 digs and two aces for the Colonels (17-10, 7-3 OVC).
Rachel Vick contributed 20 kills and six blocks.
Abbey Cvelbar recorded a double-double with 56 assists and 20 digs. She also had eight kills and no errors.
Emily Rutherford led Jacksonville State (15-11, 7-3 OVC) with 22 kills. Three other Gamecocks recorded 13 or more kills. Jennifer Hart had a match-high 61 assists and Samantha Bohne led all players with 30 digs for the home squad.
Eastern Kentucky scored four of the first five points of the decisive fifth set and led 8-4 after a kill by Plagens. Jax State battled back and tied the score 9-9 on a kill by Rutherford. The set would be tied four more times. Another Rutherford kill gave the Gamecocks match-point at 14-13 before a kill by Plagens tied it for the final time. Hart broke the tie with a kill of her own before an Eastern attack error ended the set and the match.
The Colonels will play their final non-conference match of the 2014 season on Tuesday at Northern Kentucky. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
