RICHMOND, Ky. – The opening round of the 2014 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs begins this Saturday with the Eastern Kentucky University football team hosting Indiana State. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on
ESPN3.
Both teams earned a spot in the 24-team playoff field as an at-large selection. The No. 16 Colonels (9-3, 6-2 OVC) are making their 21st FCS playoff appearance, second most in FCS history. Eastern's defense ranks second nationally in turnovers gained (31) and has forced at least two turnovers in nine contests. On offense, EKU ranks 16th nationally in rushing (229.4 yards per game) behind junior RB
Dy'Shawn Mobley, the OVC Offensive Player of the Year.
Indiana State (7-5, 4-4 MVFC) is making its first playoff appearance since 1984. The No. 21 Sycamores finished fifth in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, but picked up four wins over nationally-ranked teams – Liberty, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Youngstown State. Indiana State also tallied a win over FBS member Ball State in week three of the regular season. Sycamore QB Mike Perish has set a program record with 2,957 passing yards in 2014.
This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2000 and first-ever meeting in the FCS playoffs. The Colonels last faced a Missouri Valley Football Conference opponent on Sept. 10, 2011 and posted a 28-24 win over Missouri State.
The winner of the EKU-Indiana State game plays at No. 8 seed Chattanooga next Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m.
