RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team scored the final five points in overtime to pull out a 69-66 win over visiting Morehead State Saturday afternoon. The Lady Colonels (13-8, 7-3 OVC) have now won five straight over their league rivals.
Senior
Pilar Walker came up with two pivotal offensive rebounds in the final minute of overtime, which led to four EKU points in the victory.
Morehead State's (10-14, 4-7) Aaliyah Wells hit a pair of three-pointers in the extra session, the second of which put the Eagles ahead, 66-64, with 1:17 remaining.
On EKU's ensuing possession, Walker converted an old-fashioned three-point play off senior
Marie Carpenter's miss to put the Lady Colonels back in front, 67-66. Following a Morehead State turnover, Walker snuck under the basket for another offensive board with 17 seconds on the clock. Walker was fouled on that play, but made both free throw attempts to stretch the Eastern lead to three points, 69-66.
Morehead State's final two possessions ended in a turnover and a blocked three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation. With the score tied at 55 and less than 10 seconds left, Carpenter missed the front end of a one-and-one. After a Morehead State time out, the Eagles raced down the court for a winning shot, but had that shot rejected by sophomore
Miranda Maples.
The largest lead by either team in the second half was five points and there were numerous ties, including at 41, 46, 48, 53 and 55.
Carpenter led all players with 23 tallies, marking the 13th time this season she has reached the 20-point plateau. Maples added 14 points while freshman
Michaela Hunter came off the bench to post 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Almesha Jones paced Morehead State with 21 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Shay Steele contributed 12 points and nine rebounds.
With the win, Eastern Kentucky keeps its place atop the OVC East Division. Morehead State is now 1-5 against OVC East teams this season.
Eastern Kentucky hits the road for the next three games. First up is a trip to Jacksonville State next Saturday, Jan. 15. Game time is set for 3 p.m. ET.
