NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team opened Ohio Valley Conference action with a doubleheader split at Tennessee State Saturday afternoon. The Colonels won the opener, 1-0, before falling in game two, 4-1.
EKU now stands at 11-11 overall and 1-1 in the OVC.
Junior pitcher
Leanna Pittsenbarger only allowed two TSU (13-17, 1-1) batters to reach base in the first game. The righty gave up a lead-off walk in the third inning and a two-out double in the sixth.
The Colonels managed to push across the only run in the fourth inning. Junior
Shannon McQueen came through with a two-out RBI single, allowing fellow junior
Lauren Mitchell to score.
In the second game, Tennessee State got on the board quickly with a first inning, two-run home run from Ashley Haynes. The Tigers added two insurance runs in the fourth when Rebekka Gross notched a two-out, two-run single.
Meanwhile, EKU stranded 10 runners on base including two each in the first, second and fourth innings. The Colonels couldn't tally a run until the seventh inning when Eastern loaded the bases with one out. However, Eastern Kentucky only mustered a single run out of the situation, which came off a fielder's choice.
Tiger pitcher Olivia Gamache held Eastern Kentucky to two hits in six innings to pick up her fourth win.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude the series tomorrow, March 16 beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
