RICHMOND, Ky. – Playing its first ever night game at Gertrude Hood Field, the Eastern Kentucky University softball team had a memorable evening thanks to a doubleheader sweep over Belmont. The Colonels won by scores of 4-3 and 4-1.

Gertrude Hood Field has been home to the Colonels (22-14, 10-4 OVC) since the program's inception in 1993. Lights were installed at the softball field this past month. EKU President Michael T. Benson threw out the honorary first pitch of the second game.

In the opener, Eastern put up a four-spot in the first inning and then hung on for the victory. Senior Christina Ciolek and sophomore Sarah Fobbs came through with RBI hits in the first after sophomore Kayla Joyce and freshman Krislyn Campos began the inning with back-to-back hits.

Belmont (11-25, 5-10) scored a run in the second, fourth and sixth to close the gap to 4-3.

Junior pitcher Leanna Pittsenbarger came on in relief in the top of the sixth and got out of a bases loaded jam to prevent the Bruins from tying the game.

Sophomore Hayley Flynn (6-2) pitched the first four innings for the Colonels and gave up just one earned run on two hits. Freshman Alex Sallberg breezed through the fifth inning before getting into some trouble in the sixth.

Pittsenbarger (14-7) tossed her 16th complete game in the night cap. The righty struck out nine Belmont hitters and allowed a single run, a seventh inning solo home run by Kat Hollingsworth.

EKU broke open the second game with a three-run third inning. Ciolek keyed that inning with a two-run single through the right side. The Colonels capitalized on Fobbs' lead-off double in the fourth to score another run.

Joyce went 3-for-3 from the lead-off position in game two with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow, April 13 beginning at 2 p.m.
