RICHMOND, Ky. – Visiting Jacksonville State won both ends of a doubleheader against the Eastern Kentucky University softball team Saturday afternoon to clinch the 2014 OVC regular season title. The Gamecocks won by scores of 2-0 and 6-3.

Jacksonville State (39-12, 22-4 OVC) has now won 10 straight games while the Colonels (27-21, 14-10) have lost four in a row.

Game one was a pitching duel between two of the top pitchers in the league. Jacksonville State's Tiffany Harbin (17-6) tossed her NCAA-leading 13th shutout as the righty limited the Colonels to three hits. EKU's Leanna Pittsenbarger (19-10) was nearly as dominant, but allowed two runs in the seventh inning.

JSU got two runners on in the seventh thanks to a walk followed by a Colonel error. With one out, Hayden Crawford came through with a solid single up the middle to plate the winning runs.

Pittsenbarger recorded double-figure strikeouts for the 14th time and also set an EKU single-season record for strikeouts. The junior from Urbana, Ohio broke Jonelle Csora's 2002 record (273) when she struck out the side in the second inning. Pittsenbarger now has 282 strikeouts this spring.

In the second game, Savannah Sloan hit the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to help the Gamecocks pick up the come-from-behind win.

Junior Lauren Mitchell gave Eastern a 2-0 lead behind an RBI double in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the third.

Jacksonville State rallied with two runs in the fifth to even the score. Sophomore Sarah Fobbs quickly put EKU back on top with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. However, Stephanie Lewis notched a solo home run in the sixth to send the game to extra frames.

Sloan led off the eighth with a home run down the left field line. Lewis and Ella Denes added RBI hits later in the inning to round out the scoring.

The two teams will conclude the regular season tomorrow, May 4 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. EKU will honor its two seniors – Christina Ciolek and Nicole Heitz – before the start of the contest.
