PDF StatsRICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team sent out its two seniors with a win in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon thanks to a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville State.
The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Colonels (28-21, 15-10 OVC) and also halted Jacksonville State's (39-13, 22-5) 10-game winning streak.
The Gamecocks loaded the bases in the each of the first two innings, but only managed one run. Sophomore pitcher
Hayley Flynn (7-3) settled down after that point and did not give up another hit until the seventh. Flynn picked up her third complete game and earned her first win in nearly a month.
Eastern tied the game in the fourth with a little bit of two-out magic. Sophomore
Sarah Fobbs singled and junior
Lauren Mitchell walked to put runners at first and second. Junior
Katie Tackett then came through with an RBI single up the middle to even the score.
The Colonels finally took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. EKU's first two hitters reached base before Fobbs lined a sacrifice fly to right field to plate freshman
Krislyn Campos. Mitchell followed with a run-scoring hit to stretch the cushion to 3-1.
Jacksonville State scored a run in the top of the seventh, but Flynn got Amanda Maldonado to fly out to left field with two runners on base to end the game.
In their final home game at Gertrude Hood Field, seniors
Christina Ciolek and
Nicole Heitz each notched a hit. Ciolek laced a single in the sixth and later scored. Meanwhile, Heitz chipped in with a double to the left field wall in the third inning.
Eastern's win coupled with UT Martin's loss to Austin Peay on Sunday means the Colonels will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming OVC tournament. Jacksonville State will serve as the tournament host with opening round action scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 7.
