CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
– The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team lost its Ohio Valley Conference opener to Austin Peay, 3-1, on Friday night at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

EKU (2-8-0, 0-1-0 OVC) dominated the game statistically, outshooting APSU (2-7-0, 1-0-0 OVC), 11-8, and attempting 10 corner kicks to the Lady Govs' one; however, the Colonels could not capitalize on their ample opportunities and were eventually bested by a more opportunistic Austin Peay side.

Sisters Gina and Sophia Fabbro both scored in the first 16 minutes for APSU, putting EKU in an early hole for the third consecutive contest.

After going into the half still down by a pair of goals, EKU opened up its offense in the second half. Ten of the Colonels' 11 shots came in the final 45 minutes.

In the 52nd minute, junior Mikala Ferguson failed to convert a penalty kick that would have cut the deficit in half.

Fellow junior Katie Bright, however, did just that three minutes later, heading in a cross from senior Paige Larkin to make the score 2-1. It was Bright's first goal and Larkin's first assist of the fall.

Bright, alone, nearly completed the comeback for the Colonels. The junior attempted four more shots over the next 15 minutes of play, but could not find the back of the net.

Then, in the 80th minute, Gina Fabbro scored again, this time off an assist from Merritt Monger. Gina Fabbro's final goal stifled the growing EKU momentum and gave APSU some much-need breathing room.

"We created a lot of very dangerous chances in the second half tonight," head coach Melissa Barnes said. "We were unlucky not to score several more goals. We need to put together a full 90 minutes Sunday at Belmont."

EKU outshot APSU, 10-2, in the second half. Bright led all players in the game with five shots, three of which were on frame.

Freshman Anna Hall played all 90 minutes in the net for EKU and made four saves.

Bright, Larkin, Ferguson, junior Merrissa Vault, sophomore Cassie Smith and freshman Makenna Sullivan all went the distance for the Colonels in Friday's loss.

EKU returns to action on Sunday afternoon at conference foe Belmont. First touch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
