RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University's volleyball team beat Marshall University 3-1 on Wednesday at McBrayer Arena.
Junior
Rachel Vick led the Colonels (4-1) with a match best 18 kills. She made only one error and posted a .708 attack percentage while blocking four shots.
Alexis Plagens finished with 17 kills.
Abbey Cvelbar contributed 47 assists and
Dena Ott totaled 23 digs.
The Colonels won the first athletic event on the new McBrayer Arena court. Eastern's men's basketball team also won the first athletic event on the previous court, beating the University of Louisville 78-65 when the building opened on Dec. 4, 1963.
In the first set EKU led by two late, 23-21, before Vick recorded a kill and a Marshall attack error finished off the set. In the second set the Colonels broke a 7-7 tie with 7-2 run to take a 14-9 lead and cruised to a 25-18 win. After Marshall won the third set 25-18 Eastern pulled away late in the fourth set to win the match. EKU broke a 20-20 tie with a Marshall attack error followed by back-to-back kills from
Danielle Hicks and Plagens. Ally Peters' kill gave Eastern Kentucky match-point before another Marshall attack error finished the game 25-22.
Cassie Weaver and Lauren Legge led Marshall with 12 kills each.
EKU had an edge in blocking, 9-5, and committed 10 fewer errors.
The Colonels' next match will be against Wright State on Friday at 7 p.m.
