EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.
– Caroline Hoefert scored in the 77th minute to lift host SIUE past the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium.

Hoefert's goal snapped a two-game winning streak by the Colonels, who fall to 3-5-0 in OVC play. EKU has surrendered only two goals in its last four games.

Statistically, the game was evenly matched. SIUE narrowly outshot Eastern, 13-10. Both teams attempted three corner kicks. It was the Cougars, however, that finally broke through in the 77th minute when a series of passes by Alexandra Johnson and Emily Grahl set up Hoefert's score inside the circle.

The win improved SIUE to 2-4-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Jordan Foster led EKU offensively, firing three shots in the game, one of which was on goal.

Seniors Amani Thomas and Merrissa Vault and freshman Kacy Eckley played all 90 minutes on the backline to anchor another strong defensive effort by the Colonels.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Hall made the start and notched six saves before Hoefert's game-winner.

"We certainly played hard enough to win and created enough chances to win, but they were just better today," head coach Andrew Fleming said. "We struggled in the first half, but did a great job staying in the game. That was an issue for us earlier in the year. We simply have to perform better next weekend, but if we match our effort from this weekend, we will have a chance to make the tournament."

EKU is one of several teams that enter next weekend on the cusp of qualifying for the OVC Tournament. The Colonels host Belmont on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and then travel to play Jacksonville State in their regular season finale on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
