RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU's women's basketball team jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back on its way to a record-breaking 112-34 victory over visiting Cincinnati Christian on Thursday at McBrayer Arena.
EKU (4-1) set a new program record for margin of victory (78) and scored the fourth-most points in program history. The Colonels cracked the 100-point plateau for the first time since beating Jacksonville State 104-75 on Feb. 14, 2008. The previous record for margin of victory was 74, a 122-48 win over Thomas More on Nov. 30, 1993.
Newcomer
Jalen O'Bannon recorded her third straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Miranda Maples led all players and tied her career high with 21 points. Freshman
Abby Wright added 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field.
After falling behind right out of the gate, CCU (1-8) scored a couple of baskets to get within 10, 18-8. The Colonels then went on a 21-3 run to put the game away. EKU scored 15 straight to close the run. Through the first 16 minutes of the game, the Eagles made just 4-of-21 attempts from the field and turned the ball over 12 times.
Following a three-pointer from the left corner by
Katie Pippen to end the first quarter, Eastern Kentucky scored the first 12 points of the second quarter on six lay-ups. Back-to-back lay-ups from Maples polished off the run and put the Colonels on top 39-11.
EKU took a 50-23 lead into the locker room at the break. Eastern shot 65 percent in the first half while Cincinnati Christian made 9-of-29 for 31 percent. The Colonels out-rebounded the visitors by 11 and turned 14 CCU turnovers into 17 points.
Maples and O'Bannon combined to go 11-for-11 from the field in the first 20 minutes of action. Maples had 13 points and O'Bannon had 10 at the break.
The Colonels didn't let up in the second half. Eastern scored the first 21 points of the third quarter as the Eagles missed their first six attempts of the second half and turned the ball over seven times in the first six and a half minutes.
Mariah Massengill had seven points and seven assists for Eastern Kentucky. Baylee Bennett scored a team-best 15 points for Cincinnati Christian.
Cincinnati Christian turned the ball over 30 times and EKU out-scored the Eagles 43-7 off turnovers.
Eastern made 58 percent of its shots from the field, including 50 percent (9-for-18) from behind the arc. CCU shot 26 percent from the field.
The Colonels will be back in action on Saturday at Missouri State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
