RICHMOND, Ky. – More than a month into the season, the Eastern Kentucky University softball team will finally play its home opener this weekend. The Colonels host SIUE in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a Sunday twin bill against Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m.

This weekend is the 'Power of Maroon' weekend for the softball team. All Colonel fans are encouraged to wear maroon to the games.

Eastern Kentucky's (11-14, 2-0 OVC) Sarah Fobbs has been on a tear the last six games. The left fielder is hitting .542 (13-of-24) during that stretch with two home runs, four doubles and 10 RBIs. For the season, Fobbs leads the team in batting average (.321), home runs (four) and slugging percentage (.526).

Pitchers Leanna Pittsenbarger and Shaylon Robb have each been very effective over their last three starts. Pittsenbarger has allowed two or fewer runs in each of her last three starts with an ERA of 1.87. The righty has struck out 15 batters in those starts while opponents are batting just .170. Meanwhile, Robb's ERA in her last three starts is 1.91. Against Belmont last weekend, the senior went 5.0 innings and allowed only one run.

SIUE (19-6, 2-1 OVC) won the 2014 OVC tournament and was selected the league's preseason favorite this year. The Cougars' team ERA of 2.13 is by far the lowest in the conference. Junior pitcher Haley Chambers leads the OVC in wins (11) and ERA (1.35). Chambers is also the team's best hitter with a .397 batting average to go along with four home runs and 16 RBIs.

Eastern Illinois (7-12, 2-1 OVC) opened its conference schedule a couple of days ago with a three-game set against Austin Peay. The Panthers won two of three games while averaging 10 runs per game. Three of EIU's starters are hitting better than .350 this season – Bailey O'Dell (.444), Hannah Cole (.375) and April Markowski (.352). On the pitching front, Eastern Illinois' team ERA of 5.55 ranks in the bottom half of the league.
