RICHMOND, Ky. – Defending league champion SIUE took both games of a doubleheader from the Eastern Kentucky University softball team Saturday afternoon at Gertrude Hood Field. The Cougars won by scores of 5-1 and 8-0.
In the opener, the Colonels (11-16, 2-2 OVC) got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Amber Murray came through with a two-out RBI single to score fellow sophomore
Krislyn Campos and give EKU an early 1-0 lead.
However, SIUE (21-6, 4-1) struck back with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull away. Brittany Toney hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead. SIUE pitcher Haley Chambers went the distance and struck out 13 EKU batters to notch her 12th win.
The second game was a tight affair until the Cougars exploded for seven runs in the sixth to clinch the win. SIUE pitcher Baylee Douglass (8-2) limited Eastern to four singles and struck out eight Colonels to come away with the shutout.
Eastern Kentucky is right back in action tomorrow, March 22 with a home doubleheader against Eastern Illinois. Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
