Nowlin Ties EKU Record With 3 Home Runs

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Junior Kyle Nowlin tied the school record with three home runs, but Eastern Kentucky lost at Morehead State, 11-10.

Nowlin's third home run of the game tied the score, 10-10, in the top of the eighth.  His third was much like his first, over the wall in left center.  It's the second three-homer game of his career.  Three other Colonels have also hit three in a game.

Morehead State's Ryan Kent led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to center field.  With one out and two on, Chris Robinson's single into right center brought home the game winning run.

Nowlin went 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs.  MSU's Robinson had four hits in five at bats, scored three times and drove in two.

The Colonels (7-15, 2-5 OVC) broke a 1-1 tie with a big third inning.  With one out and one on, Nowlin crushed the ball well over the wall in left center.  The next two batters drew walks.  MSU starter Aaron Leasher struck out Doug Teegarden before Kenny Hostrander made it 6-1 when he hit the second pitch he saw just over the net in right center to bring home three more.  It was the first round-tripper of the season for the junior.

Mandy Alvarez made it 8-2 in the top of the fourth with his third home run of the series, and fifth of the season.  The junior newcomer turned on a 1-1 pitch and drove it over the wall in left field with TJ Alas on base.  Morehead State closed the gap to 8-5 before Nowlin hit his second home run of the game in the sixth inning.  This time the junior lifted a solo shot just over the high net in center field.

Morehead State (12-13, 4-7 OVC) trailed 9-5 heading into the sixth but platted five runs to take the lead.  Robby Spencer knotted the score with a 3-run home run over the net in right center.  Alex Stephens scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by EKU.

The Eagles had the bases loaded with just one out in the seventh.  Ben Gullo got Spencer swinging.  The next batter, Nick Newell, lifted a fly ball into foul territory along the third base fence.  Alvarez gave chase but tripped near the fence.  Somehow, he rebounded and made the catch to end the inning.  Alvarez made another stellar play in the bottom of the eighth to save a run.  With a runner at third and the infield playing in, Alvarez back handed a hard hit ground ball and gunned down the runner at the plate.

The series finale between these two teams will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
