DAYTON, Ohio – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell to host Wright State, 3-2, in its final exhibition game of the preseason on Sunday evening at Alumni Field.
WSU, which tied No. 12 West Virginia, 2-2, in its only other exhibition, raced out to a quick 3-0 lead over Eastern, thanks to first-half goals from Sarah Calvin (7"), Savannah Carmosino (17") and Natalie Sedlock (44").
However, EKU settled in and battled back over the final 45 minutes. Senior
Mikala Ferguson, who scored the game-winner in the Colonels' win over Mercer on Thursday, got EKU on the board when she converted a penalty kick in the 67
th minute. Fellow senior
Amani Thomas then pulled EKU to within a goal when she scored in the 87
th minute.
But, it was too little, too late, as Wright State held on for the win.
Ferguson, Thomas and freshman
Haley Kemper led the Colonels with two shots apiece.
Senior
Samm Melton played all 90 minutes in goal for the Colonels, making four saves.
Freshmen defenders
Kacy Eckley (80 minutes) and
Emily Beaver (78 minutes) played the most minutes of anyone on the team except Melton in Sunday's exhibition.
In all, 24 Colonels saw the field.
EKU opens the regular season Friday, August 21, at Western Carolina. First touch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
