ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore
Emmi Carroll scored in the 86
th minute to pull the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to within one of host UNC Asheville; however, the comeback fell just short as the Colonels lost to the Bulldogs, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Carroll's goal – the first of the season for EKU – came directly off a free kick from just outside the box. But, it was too little, too late.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the 13
th minute when Caroline Houser scored off an assist from Alex Stadford. Houser then assisted on a goal by Paige Trent in the 62
nd minute to give UNCA a much-needed cushion.
"At this level, we will always be punished for defensive lapses," head coach
Andrew Fleming said. "You just can't get away with some of the mistakes we're making. I expect us to learn and get better, but until we do good teams will almost always capitalize."
EKU attempted 11 shots and five corner kicks in the loss. Carroll, senior
Amani Thomas, junior
Cassie Smith and sophomore
Jordan Foster all fired two shots apiece.
"We continue to create chances that should be goals, but if you don't turn those chances into goals, it's a long day," Fleming added. "We have to find a way to start better and stay out of situations that have us chasing the game."
Senior
Samm Melton played the whole game in goal for the Colonels and made a career-high 10 saves. Senior
Merrissa Vault and freshman
Emily Beaver went the distance on the backline for EKU.
The Colonels will host Cleveland State in their home opener on Friday, August 28, at 5:00 p.m.
