HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Junior
Cassie Smith scored her first goal of the season, but the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell at Marshall, 5-1, on Monday at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Smith – the second-leading scorer in EKU history with 13 career goals – finally found the back of the net in the 59
th minute on Monday, taking a pass from sophomore
Emmi Carroll and driving home a low shot to the far post to cut Marshall's lead to 3-1.
However, the Colonel momentum was short-lived. Just over a minute later, Marshall's Sydney Arnold scored to make it 4-1. Two minutes after that, Arnold struck again, this time scoring on an uncontested breakaway to put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Bailly Bounds led Eastern with two shots in the game. Smith, Carroll, senior
Mikala Ferguson and sophomore
Jordan Foster all attempted shots on goal.
Erin Simmons paced the Marshall attack, attempting six shots, scoring two goals and recording an assist.
Senior

Anna Hall split time in goal for the Colonels. Melton played the first 59 minutes and made three saves. Hall played the final 31 minutes and made two saves.
