O'Bannon Scores Career High, Colonels Fall, 89-74

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Junior Jalen O'Bannon scored a career high 30 points, but it was not enough as the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team fell at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 89-74, on Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.

O'Bannon scored eight of the first 12 points as the Colonels hung with the Cougars through the first period, 25-21. The second period saw the Cougars go on a 15-0 run, eventually taking a 44-26 lead into halftime.

Undeterred by the 18-point deficit, Eastern used a 24-11 run to cut the deficit to five, 55-50, on a pair of free throws by junior Mariah Massengill with 1:44 remaining in the third period. O'Bannon scored eight points and freshman Abby Wright drained a big three-pointer during the run.

SIUE stretched its lead back to 15, 69-54, on a three-pointer by Shronda Butts with 7:28 remaining in the game. However, the Colonels still were not done. Eastern responded with a 17-7 run and pulled back to within six, 77-71, when junior Michaela Hunter converted a layup with 2:45 on the clock.

SIUE finished the game on a 12-3 run, pulling away down the stretch.

O'Bannon finished with a double-double, tallying 30 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Hunter finished with eight points while dishing out four assists. Senior Shameekia Murray posted a line of seven points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Butts led the way for SIUE, scoring 24 points to go along with seven assists and six rebounds.

The Colonels return to McBrayer arena on Wednesday, January 20 to play Murray State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
