Jacksonville State Edges EKU, 56-54, In Closing Seconds

RICHMOND, Ky. -
Two Jacksonville State free throws with six seconds left to play lifted the visiting Gamecocks over the EKU women's basketball team Wednesday at McBrayer Arena.

Trailing 54-52, Jacksonville State outscored the Colonels 4-0 in the final 33 seconds to steal a win in Richmond. After Tyler Phelion laid it in to tie it up at 54 with only 20 seconds remaining in regulation, an EKU foul sent the Gamecocks to the charity stripe.

Jacksonville State (8-13, 3-6 OVC) claimed a 56-54 lead following two made free throws from Briana Benson.

JSU took a 49-47 lead with 3:18 to play before senior Miranda Maples connected on a jumper in the paint, knotting the score at 49 with 2:11 remaining.

On the ensuing EKU possession, Maples found herself in prime position for the pivotal offensive rebound and laid it in to put the Colonels back on top. Eastern came away with the stop on the defensive end, as a layup from junior Michaela Hunter extended the EKU lead 53-49 with less than a minute left in regulation.

A Gamecock three-pointer cut the EKU lead to one, as Gretchen Morrison hit from long range with a mere 33 seconds on the clock.

EKU clung to a 53-52 lead before senior Shameekia Murray calmly knocked down a free throw, giving the Colonels a 54-52 advantage.

Eastern controlled the paint the duration of the contest, outscoring the Gamecocks 24-8 inside. However, the JSU defense converted 17 EKU turnovers into 18 points.

O'Bannon logged her 18th game scoring in double digits with 18 points on the night.She finished with nine rebounds and a season-high six assists. Murray added 14 points and five boards, as Hunter chipped in 12 points. Maples finished with five points and six rebounds in the loss.

Benson paced the Gamecocks with 17 points and four rebounds.

Eastern will host Morehead State University on Saturday at McBrayer Arena in another Ohio Valley Conference matchup. Saturday's game is slated for a 5 p.m. tip.
