RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team broke the program record for wins in a season with a decisive, 4-0 victory over visiting Eastern Illinois on Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
With the win, and an SIUE loss to Tennessee Tech, EKU (11-4-0, 6-2-0 OVC) moves into second place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with two games to play in the regular season. The Colonels have also now clinched their first berth in the OVC Tournament since 2012.
After going scoreless for most of the first half, the Colonels took the lead in the 44
th minute on a goal from senior
Cassie Smith. Smith played a ball from sophomore
Tara Claus and planted it in the back of the EIU net. The Ashburn, Virginia native now has six goals on the year, and a school-record 20 goals for her career.
Senior
Mikayla Brillon – who notched her first-career goal in last Friday's win at UT Martin – scored her second goal in the last three games when she took a pass from junior
Emmi Carroll and shot it from 15 yards out in the 77
th minute.
Less than three minutes later,
Kayla Childs netted her third goal of the season. The freshman from Cincinnati played a pass from junior
Jordan Foster and drained a shot in the 80
th minute.
Claus scored the final Colonel goal of the day in spectacular fashion, bending a corner kick into the top right corner of the net for an olimpico exclamation point.
"Today was a good team win," first-year head coach
Nick Flohre said. "Eastern Illinois is a tough team to play against, but the players have to take credit for sticking to the game plan and keeping themselves from being frustrated. It's a great way to start the Homecoming Weekend. We now have to get ready for a very dangerous SIUE team on Sunday."
Junior goalkeeper
Anna Hall got her eighth shutout of the season in the victory, while sophomore center back
Kacy Eckley played all 90 minutes for the stingy Colonel defense. EKU has not given up a goal at home in the last six matches.
EKU notched a 24-4 shot advantage on the day, including an 11-to-1 shots on frame edge.
The Colonels return to action Sunday afternoon when they host SIUE for Senior Day. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
