RICHMOND, Ky. – In a match where the first four sets were only decided by one more than the minimum eight points, Eastern Kentucky team beat Jacksonville State 3-2 on Friday at McBrayer Arena.
Set scores were 24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-11. The Colonels improved to 11-12 overall and 6-5 in Ohio Valley Conference matches. The Gamecocks fell to 17-14 on the season and 5-6 against league teams.
Celina Sanks and
Nikki Drost led EKU with 22 and 21 kills respectively.
Rachel Woody had 52 assists and
Mallory Maxwell contributed 23 digs. Sanks hit .286 for the game.
Allyson Zuhlke finished with 20 kills for JSU.
With the match tied 1-1 and the third set tied 23-23, Eastern scored the final two points to take the lead. A block by
Kaylin Johnson and
Celina Sanks ended the set. After the Gamecocks tied the match 2-2, Eastern jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fifth set and never looked back. A kill by Drost ended the set and the match.
The Colonels close out the home portion of their 2016 schedule on Saturday against Tennessee Tech. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at McBrayer Arena.
