- EKU (1-0) ran out to a 24-point lead and then held on late to defeat IUPUI, 97-87, in its season opener on Friday night at McBrayer Arena. The Colonels shot 56 free throws in the game, and made 45 of them.

- Sophomore forward Nick Mayo – a preseason All-OVC selection – led the Colonels on Friday with 24 points and eight rebounds. He was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line.

- Freshman guard Asante Gist scored 21 points, grabbed seven boards and dished out five assists in his Colonel debut. Sixteen of his 21 points came from the charity stripe. Gist's 16 free throws were the most by a Colonel since Jarelle Reischel sank 17 in a win at Savannah State on December 5, 2015.

- Seniors Jaylen Babb-Harrison (13) and Isaac McGlone (11) also reached double figures versus IUPUI, while Louisville transfer Dillon Avare came off the bench to sink three three-pointers and finish with 11 points.

- Four other Colonels also made their EKU debuts. Junior college transfer Zach Charles earned a start and finished with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Freshmen DeAndre Dishman (eight points, five rebounds), Marlon Adams (two points, five rebounds) and Parker Chitty came off the bench.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

- UNCW (1-0) is ranked No. 7 in the country in CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top-25 rankings. The Seahawks went 25-8 last season, won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and gave Duke all it could handle in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to the Blue Devils, 93-85.

- UNCW defeated Claflin, 110-64, in its opener on Friday night. Chris Flemmings led the Seahawks with 28 points, while C.J. Bryce contributed 23 points and five assists.

- EKU leads the all-time series with UNCW, 3-2; however, the Seahawks defeated the Colonels, 78-59, last November in Wilmington.

UP NEXT

Following Monday night's game, EKU will embark on its week-long Cancun Challenge trip, beginning with a Thursday night showdown at Auburn.
