KENT, Ohio – After handing Mid-American Conference opponent, Bowling Green State University, a 57-55 loss in Friday's season opener, the EKU women's basketball team will face off against another MAC team as it takes on Kent State University on Monday.
 
Monday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip from the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
 
The Colonels overcame a nine-point deficit in the third quarter, using key rebounding late to hang on for the win in Friday's opener.
 
Junior Mariah Massengill's layup put the Colonels up 48-47 with 5:48 left and EKU led the rest of the way. Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year Jalen O'Bannon knocked down a jumper on the next two EKU possessions to extend the lead to five with less than four minutes to play.  
 
A BGSU three-pointer with under a minute to play kept the game within reach for the Falcons, but determined rebounding helped the Colonels to the victory.
 
Senior guard Shavontae Naylor led EKU with 15 points and 12 rebounds, notching a double-double in her first game as a Colonel. O'Bannon, meanwhile, logged her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards.
 
Kent State is coming of a 77-52 win over Bradley University in its season opener under first-year head coach Todd Starkey.
 
Senior guard Larissa Lurken led the Golden Flashes with 22 points on 6-of-15 from the floor in Friday's win.
 
The Golden Flashes lead the all-time series over the Colonels 3-2. Kent State won the last meeting 75-74 on Nov. 10, 2013 in Kent.
