Cooper Nets New Career High in Loss to Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio –
An 11 point run which spanned two periods helped the Raiders of Wright State University down the visiting Colonels of Eastern Kentucky University, 85-73, in the opening game of the Wright State Invitational presented by Holiday Inn Monday at the Nutter Center.
 
EKU senior guard Alexus Cooper led the way for the Colonels with 26 points, setting a new career-high and notching her seventh double-digit performance of the season.  She dished out a career-high eight assists in the loss. Senior forward Jalen O'Bannon added 18 points and five rebounds for the Colonels.
 
The Raiders scored the final five points before intermission, before tallying six straight to open the second half. The Colonels could not overcome the 11-point deficit.
 
After falling behind 11-2, the Colonels put together a 9-0 run to tie the game at 11 in the opening frame. EKU connected on four straight field goals over a span of 1:28 to close in on the Wright State lead. Meanwhile, the Eastern Kentucky defense held the Raiders scoreless for a span of 3:05, missing of six straight shots from the field.
 
As time wound down, however, in the first WSU extended its lead to six before the second period. The Colonels slowly cut into the lead.
 
Cooper's three ball from the right wing cut the lead in half, putting the Colonels within three. Following two Raider baskets, Cooper found a slashing Amadi Brooks for the layup in the paint. With Wright State holding onto a six-point lead, sophomore forward Abby Wright connected from deep, before Cooper followed suit on the ensuing EKU possession to trim the margin to two.
 
Cooper pulled up from the paint to tie the contest at 31 with 3:10 to play in the opening half. Wright State's Myrthe den Heeten hit from deep, extending the WSU lead back to three.
 
EKU freshman forward Tae'lour Richardson went up and under a Raider defender for the bucket, trimming the lead back to one.
 
Cooper, once again, hit from behind the arc in the right corner to tie the game for the fifth time with 66 seconds before intermission. However, the Raiders scored five straight to close the half.
 
The Colonels continue action at the Wright State Invitational presented by Holiday Inn Tuesday. EKU takes on its third Mid-American Conference opponent of the season when it faces off against Miami (OH) University. Tuesday's contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip.
