WILMINGTON, N.C. – A career day from junior pitcher
Alex Sallberg helped the Eastern Kentucky University softball team to its second win in as many days with a 4-3 win over Saint Francis University (Pa.) Saturday at Boseman Field.
Sallberg was impressive in Saturday's outing, tallying a career-high 10 strikeouts and scattering only four hits in five and one-third innings on the mound. Sallberg got the start and tossed three and one-third innings, before Haley Flynn took the mound.
Flynn added a solid one and two-thirds innings of relief work, as Sallberg re-entered the game in the top of the sixth and earned the save.
The Colonels drew first blood, plating a lone run in the home half of the second.
Sarah Fobbs drove a lead-off double to left field, before
Sarah Jackson drew a base on balls to put two runners on for
Amber Murray. Murray dropped a well-executed sacrifice bunt to advance Fobbs and Jackson, as a wild pitch from Saint Francis allowed Fobbs to log her first run of the season.
Saint Francis got on the board in the fourth after a blundered EKU throw and an RBI single from Kindra Witthus to take a 2-1 lead.
EKU responded in a hurry, regaining a 3-2 advantage in the lower half of the fourth. Murray sent a solo shot over the fence in left field to tie the game at two. Later in the inning,
Paige Murphy scored on a sacrifice fly from
Krislyn Campos that put EKU up, 3-2.
The Red Flash, however, tied at three in the top of the fifth with a solo homer from Jordan Seneca.
EKU delivered the game-winning run in the home half of the fifth on a single from Murphy which scored
Brittany Oldaker for the win.
Sallberg and the EKU defense thwarted the St. Francis comeback attempt, keeping the Red Flash scoreless in its final two at bats.
The Colonels (2-1) continue play at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Seahawk Softball Bash on Sunday in a rematch against St. Francis.
Sunday's game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
