Box Score
WILMINGTON, N.C. – With a 6-4 win over Saint Francis University (Pa.) on Sunday in its final game of the Fairfield Inn and Suites Seahawk Softball Bash, the EKU softball team moved to 3-1 for its best start since the 2013 season.
"Today was a total team win," Head Coach
Jane Worthington said. "Everyone contributed to today's win and the three wins this weekend. It was an all around team effort."
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, an RBI single from EKU's
Krislyn Campos scored
Paige Murphy to even the score after St. Francis notched a run in the bottom of the first.
The Red Flash (3-2) regained the lead in the bottom of the second, however, plating two runs to extend their lead to 3-1.
The Colonels' (3-1) offense generated runs in each of the following four innings to help EKU to its third win of the season.
With two away in the top of the third,
Sarah Fobbs singled through the left side to put one on for the Colonels. Fobbs swiped second for her second stolen base of the season, before
Sarah Jackson sent a ball to short on a 1-2 count. The ball was mishandled by St. Francis, as Fobbs scored from second to pull the Colonels within one at 3-2.
EKU added two more runs in the top of the fourth after three SFU errors. With runners on the corners, Campos punched one to third base that was fumbled and helped Murphy score from third.
Kayla Joyce then battled back from an 0-2 count for an RBI single to center field which scored
Rachel Minogue from second base, as the Colonels took their first lead of the game at 4-3.
The Red Flash answered with a run in the home half of the fourth, but EKU responded yet again.
Back-to-back lead-off singles from Fobbs and Jackson put two on for the Colonels with no outs in the top of the fifth. Jackson and Fobbs both advanced on a double steal, which put two in scoring position as Murphy stepped to the plate.
Murphy reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Fobbs to give the Colonels the go-ahead run. However, EKU added an insurance run in the sixth for good measure.
In the sixth, Jackson delivered a ground ball RBI to second base that scored Joyce and gave EKU a 6-4 win over the Red Flash.
Joyce led the EKU offense, going 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI, as Clark and Fobbs both finished 2-for-4.
Hayley Flynn (3-1) struck out four, allowing a single run in four innings of work to pick up her third win of the season.
Alex Sallberg notched her second save of the young season and did not allow a hit in two innings on the mound.
The Colonels return to action on Friday at the Total Control Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois Chicago. EKU will take on Loyola at 12:30 p.m. in the first of four weekend games.
