EKU Dominates Jacksonville State in 76-50 Win

Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The EKU women's basketball team outscored Jacksonville State University 20-6 in the second quarter on its way to a dominating 76-50 win at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Wednesday.
 
The Colonels' (14-10, 8-5 OVC) 76 points marked the most given up by the Gamecocks this season. JSU entered Wednesday's contest allowing an Ohio Valley Conference best 56.8 points-per-game.
 
EKU opened the second quarter on an 18-2 run sparked by a Jasmine Henshaw offensive putback for two of her four points on the night. The Colonels continued the onslaught, extending their lead to 29-17 before the Gamecocks scored their first points of the second period with 3:58 left to play in the first half.
 
A 10-4 run to close the first half put the Colonels in front 39-23 at the break.
 
The Colonels kept the pace in the third period, opening on a 9-0 run. EKU capped a 32-8 run with a three-pointer from Alexus Cooper with 4:58 to play in third.
 
EKU held a 19-17 advantage following a back-and-forth opening period. The Colonels netted the contest's first five points, as Miranda Maples knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing to put the Colonels up, 3-0 in the opening minutes.
 
Jalen O'Bannon laid it in to extend the EKU lead to 5-0, before the Gamecocks answered with a 5-0 run to even the score.
 
The Colonels connected on five of their final seven field goal attempts to end the opening period and held a 19-17 lead after 10 minutes of play.
 
EKU finished the night 29-of-51 (56.9 percent) from the floor, marking the second-best shooting performance of the season. With the win, the Colonels have won three of their last four contests.
 
O'Bannon led the Colonels with 28 points. Shameekia Murray added 14 points, along with 13 from Maples.
 
Wednesday's win marked the second time on the season the Colonels never trailed in a victory. The 26-point defeat was the largest this season for JSU and is the third largest margin of victory for EKU this season.
 
EKU travels to nearby Morehead State (9-18, 3-10 OVC) on Saturday for a noon tip at Johnson Arena.
