Box Score
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Kyle Nowlin blasted three home runs as the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team defeated the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits, 6-4.
The scoring started early for the Colonels (4-4) as Nowlin hit a two-run shot over the left-field wall in the bottom of the first.
SDSU (0-8) answered with two runs of its own to tie the game in the top of the second.
Logan Starnes came to the plate in the bottom of the inning and picked up an RBI single to give Eastern the lead, 3-2.
After EKU made short work of the Jackrabbits in the top of the third, Nowlin led off the bottom half of the inning with his second home run of the day, this time sending it 380 feet over the center-field wall to give Eastern a 4-2 lead.
South Dakota cut into the lead in the top of the fifth, making it 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Starnes knocked in his second RBI of the day to put EKU ahead 5-3.
Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Nowlin sent another ball over the left field wall, giving him three home runs on the day, and Eastern a 6-3 lead. Nowlin tied the school record for home runs in a game that he shares with three others. It is an accomplishment that Nowlin has now completed four times in his career. This was the first three home run game at Brooks Field in nearly 10 years. The last occurred on March 8, 2006.
The Jackrabbits tried to rally in the ninth, scoring a run before succumbing to the Colonels, 6-4.
Nick Cumpston (1-0) went five innings for Eastern, notching two strikeouts.
Brian Mroz picked up his second save of the season while striking out two batters as well.
Head coach
Edwin Thompson admired what he saw out of his team today. "To play a double-header yesterday, and come out strong in an early game the next day, it shows a lot of grit. These men have developed a will to win, and that's going to pay off as the season goes on."
The Colonels return to Richmond to open home play against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, March 4. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field.
