RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU struck early and often on its way to a 17-1 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Friday night at Turkey Hughes Field.

The scoring for the Colonels (5-4) started in the bottom of the first when
Mandy Alvarez picked up an RBI single, scoring
Doug Teegarden.
Matt Olive picked up an RBI of his own when he brought Alvarez home on a ground out.
Cole Warrenfeltz came up next, and he belted a two-run double to left field, scoring
Ben Fisher and
Shea Sullivan. At the bottom of the order,
Logan Starnes lined up the right side to score Warrenfeltz. Teegarden finished off the scoring in the first with a two RBI double, scoring both Starnes and
Luke Wurzelbacher. When the dust settled after the first inning, EKU held a 7-0 lead.

Eastern would score in almost every inning, the exception being the sixth inning.

Starnes led the way for EKU going three-for-four and picking up three RBIs. Alvarez continued his early season success with three hits and two RBIs. Fisher also notched three hits and drove in one on the evening.

Eric Nerl (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, going seven innings while striking out five batters and allowing one run.

Mike Escanilla drove in the lone run for the Hawks (3-5) on a double down the left field line in the top of the fourth. He finished 2-for-3.

The Colonels are back at it Saturday afternoon with a double-header against the Hawks. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field.Â
