MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The EKU softball team topped Howard University and Gardner-Webb University on Saturday to complete the four game sweep at the Hornet Tournament hosted by Alabama State University.
EKU (10-2) extends its winning streak to seven games with Saturday's wins.
The Colonels downed Howard in Saturday's first game, 11-1, before picking up a 4-1 win over Gardner-Webb.
In the first inning in Saturday's earlier game, the Colonels put three across the plate beginning with a double down the left field line by sophomore
Paige Murphy. A Howard fielding error put
Hannah Clark on and sent Joyce home, giving EKU a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Sarah Fobbs then squared up and cleaned the bases with a round-tripper to right field, notching two RBIs and extending the Colonels' lead.
EKU then lit up the diamond in the second, adding seven runs.
Junior
Kelly Wood singled to put two on for the Colonels after
Brittany Oldaker reached on an error.
Krislyn Campos dropped a single to center to score Wood and Oldaker and add to the damage.
Kayla Joyce knocked a single to center for the third EKU run of the inning. Clark then logged a two-run triple to center field for her second three-bagger in as many games, widening the EKU lead to 8-0.
Later in the inning, a
Rachel Minogue double and an Oldaker single drove in two more runs to give EKU a commanding 10-0 lead.
The Bison got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, but the margin was too wide.
The Colonels added an insurance run in the fourth with an RBI single from Minogue that proved to be the game winner.
In Saturday's second game, two runs in the first and third innings completed the weekend sweep for the Colonels in a 4-1 win over Gardner-Webb.
Campos gave EKU a 1-0 lead after scoring on a wild pitch, before Fobbs dropped a sacrifice RBI down the line to drive in Joyce as the Colonels held a 2-0 lead after one.
Gardner-Webb drew a base on balls with the bases loaded to narrow the EKU lead to 2-1 in the top of the second.
After being held scoreless in the home half of the second, EKU added the game-winning runs in the third. Campos rounded the bags to add to the Colonels' lead, before a Clark long ball clinched the fourth win of the weekend for EKU.
Fobbs and Clark finished 2-for-5 on the day with three RBIs to lead the Colonels. Meanwhile, Joyce, Campos and Minogue added three hits each for EKU.
Hayley Flynn and
Alex Sallberg led the EKU pitching corps. Flynn logged eight strikeouts in four innings on Saturday, along with six strikeouts from Sallberg.
Murphy McRoberts logged two innings on the mound, while
Peyton Hutchens made her first appearance of the season, recording three innings of relief.
The Colonels will travel to Statesboro, Georgia next weekend at the Eagle Classic hosted by Georgia Southern. The Colonels will play two games against both the University of North Dakota and Harvard University and conclude the event on Sunday against Georgia Southern.
