Colonels' Comeback Bid Falls Short at Belmont, 72-61

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Despite holding Belmont to its second lowest scoring affair of the season at the Curb Center, the Bruins' third period run lifted Belmont to a 72-61 win over the EKU women's basketball team on Saturday.

Belmont (16-7, 8-2 OVC) opened the second half on an 18-0 run, but the Colonels stayed the course and did not go away easily.

A long ball from freshman Abby Wright ended Belmont's run, as Wright netted seven straight for the Colonels. After Wright drained a jumper on the ensuing possession, two free throws from the Murfreesboro, Tennessee native cut the Bruins' lead to 13 with 1:49 to play in the third.

Senior Jasmine Henshaw converted on a jumper, before senior Jalen O'Bannon laid it in for two of her 19 points as the Colonels continued on their way to a 9-0 run to close the third period.

The Colonels' offense added six points over a 1:05 span to cut the lead to six with just under seven minutes remaining, before the Bruins gradually extended their lead back to double digits to clinch the win.

O'Bannon logged her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Colonels. Junior Mariah Massengill added 11 points for EKU, while Wright finished with nine points and three rebounds.

EKU (12-10, 6-5 OVC) returns to McBrayer Arena on Saturday to square off against Tennessee State. Saturday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
