NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A five-run fourth inning gave the EKU softball team the cushion it needed, as the Colonels completed the sweep of Tennessee State University with a 10-2 win on Saturday at Tiger Field.
The first three batters of the inning recorded hits, as freshman
Hannah Clark knocked a leadoff triple to the gap in right center to start the Colonels' big inning. An RBI double from freshman
Rachel Minogue plated the first run of the contest followed by a single from sophomore
Johnkyria Alston.
Junior
Amber Murray roped a triple to right, scoring Alston and Minogue to extend EKU's lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, seniors
Kayla Joyce and
Sarah Fobbs added RBI singles, putting the Colonels up 5-0.
Despite not recording a hit, the Tigers put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning to close the lead back to three.
EKU scored in each of the final three innings to complete the series sweep over TSU. With a 7-2 lead in the top of the seventh, a two RBI single from
Paige Murphy put EKU out in front by seven. Fobbs later legged out a triple to score Murphy, giving the Colonels the 10-2 win in the rubber match.
The Colonels outscored the Tigers 32-5 in the three-game series to open OVC play.
Fobbs, Minogue, Murray and Murphy each had two RBIs for EKU in the win. Minogue's three hits led the EKU offense.
Once again, the Colonels' pitching rotation constrained any offensive attempt for TSU. EKU allowed just four hits in the win with four strikeouts.
EKU continues OVC play with a doubleheader against Murray State University on Friday at Gertrude Hood Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
