RICHMOND, Ky. – A walk off RBI single in the bottom of the 10
th inning from junior
Krislyn Campos gave the EKU softball team its second victory of the day in a 4-3 win over Murray State University at Gertrude Hood Field on Friday.
EKU (20-6, 5-0) continues with its best start in program history, after winning Friday's first game, 3-2.
Campos took the 1-0 pitch up the middle, as junior
Amber Murray scored from second to give the Colonels their 20
th win of the young season.
EKU struck first as senior
Sarah Fobbs knocked a three-run shot well over the wall in right center to give the Colonels an early lead. The Colonels tallied five hits in the inning, as Fobbs' homer scored
Paige Murphy and
Kayla Joyce.
Murray State (10-16, 1-4 OVC) answered right back in the top of the second, tying the game at three. A RBI groundout with the bases loaded from Maddy Fenney put the Racers on the board. Later in the inning, Shelbey Miller drove a two-run double to left, evening the score at three apiece.
Neither team would cross the plate for another seven innings, until Campos' game-winner in extra innings.
Senior
Hayley Flynn logged 11 strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings of relief—seven of which came against Murray State's final nine batters.
Flynn gave up just two hits against 20 Murray State appearances at the plate to pick up her 13
th win of the year.
The Colonels trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth in game two, before an RBI groundout from Fobbs knotted the score at two. With two outs, freshman
Hannah Clark reached on an error from the Murray second baseman, allowing senior
Kayla Joyce to plate the go-ahead run.
The Racers threatened in the top half of the seventh, but the Colonels thwarted the comeback attempt. Murray State had two runners in scoring position and only one out in the inning. A heads-up play from Murray pickled the Murray State base runner for an untraditional out that put EKU just one out away from the win.
A 2-2 pitch from junior
Alex Sallberg caught Brenna Fink looking, as the Colonels picked up the win.
Sallberg and Flynn combined for 13 strikeouts in Friday's second game, finishing one shy of the season high.
Fobbs led the EKU offense, going 2-for-8 on the day with four RBIs.
The Colonels remain at home on Saturday as they take on Austin Peay State University in another OVC twin bill. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
