RICHMOND, Ky. – Daniel McFarland's single down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth gave Eastern Kentucky a 6-5 win over Evansville in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
With the game tied 5-5,
Cole Warrenfeltz reached base on a wild pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth in game two.
Kyle Nowlin then singled through the left side to get runners on the corners. With a drawn in infield,
Daniel McFarland punched the game winning hit down the right field line.
EKU (11-13) wasted little time getting it going in the second game. Nowlin led off the first inning with his 10th home run of the season. He began the day fourth in the nation in home runs. McFarland followed with a single and then scored from first on a double by
Mandy Alvarez. Alvarez advanced to third on a fly ball and then scored on a ground out to make it 3-0 after one.
A two-run home run by Nowlin in the fifth extended the Colonels' margin to 5-1.
Evansville (11-11) got three in the top of the sixth, including two off Jonathan Ramon's double to left, to close the gap to a single run. The Purple Aces tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Travis Tokarek.
Nowlin finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. McFarland had four hits in five at bats, scored once and drove in the game-winner.
The Purple Aces won the first game 10-2.
In game one, the teams each scored a run early and then played to a 1-1 tie until the top of the seventh inning. EKU tied the game in the bottom of the second on
Ben Fisher's single to left center that brought home
Shea Sullivan.
The Purple Aces scored their first two runs of a six-run seventh inning on a pair of EKU throwing errors. Boomer Synek had a run scoring double and Eric McKibban drove in two with a double for a 6-1 Evansville lead. Korbin Williams added an RBI single to cap the big inning.
Nine different Colonels had one hit each. Fisher finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI.
UE starter Patrick Schnieders (2-1) allowed just two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. Williams went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs for Evansville. McKibban finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
EKU will play at Dayton on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
