RICHMOND, Ky. – A walk-off grand slam from freshman
Hannah Clark gave the EKU softball team its eighth straight win in a 9-0 rout of Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday at Gertrude Hood Field.
The grand slam was the first of the season for Colonels and gave Clark her fourth homer of the year, tying a team-high. The four-run blast marked the first grand slam for EKU since Christina Ciolek's on March 22, 2013.
With a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, the freshman belted the 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center to lift the Colonels to their eight consecutive win.
EKU (23-6, 8-0 OVC) took an early 2-0 lead on a two RBI single to short from senior
Sarah Fobbs in the home half of the first.
The Colonels added three more in the bottom of the third, as junior
Krislyn Campos got the inning started with a leadoff double to right center. A deep foul ball from senior
Kayla Joyce scored Campos to extend the EKU lead to 3-0. Fobbs stepped to the plate and drove a double down the line in right field to send
Paige Murphy home for the score. Clark tallied her first of five RBIs in the game on a RBI groundout to short that scored Fobbs and gave the Colonels a 5-0 lead.
Senior right-hander
Hayley Flynn was again authoritative in the complete game shutout. Flynn struck out eight, allowing just two hits from NKU on the day. Tuesday's complete game marked the fourth of the season for Flynn.
Clark's five RBIs is a season single-game high for EKU. Fobbs finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the win.
The Colonels return to Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend in a three-game series with Morehead State. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start with the series finale slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
