MOREHEAD, Ky. – The EKU softball team picked up two pivotal Ohio Valley Conference wins, defeating Morehead State in Saturday's doubleheader at University Field.
EKU (25-6, 9-0 OVC) racked up 10 RBIs on the day in a 2-0 win in Saturday's first game, before an 8-1 victory in the following game.
Freshman
Hannah Clark played the role of hero once again, as her two-run homer in the top of the seventh broke a 0-0 tie to lift the Colonels in game one. Saturday's long ball marked the second in as many games for the freshman after Tuesday's walk-off grand slam in EKU's 9-0 win over Northern Kentucky.
In a relief effort in the bottom of the seventh, junior
Alex Sallberg came up with a clutch strikeout to end the contest and seal the win for EKU. Sallberg's save marked the fifth of the season, setting a new program record for saves in a season.
Senior
Hayley Flynn was again methodical, as she picked up her 16th win of the season. Flynn held the MSU offense to six hits and struck out five in game one.
The Colonels had a much easier time in game two, as the Colonels plated runs in four of the seven innings to pick up their 25th win of the season, continuing the best start in the program's 24-year history.
EKU took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from
Rachel Minogue to score
Johnkyria Alston. The Colonels added runs in three of the next four innings to put the game away.
With
Amber Murray aboard, junior
Krislyn Campos drove a ball over the wall in center field for the two-run homer, extending the EKU lead to three. Later in the inning, Alston doubled to the gap in right center to score
Paige Murphy.
With a 4-0 lead in the fifth, Clark sent a single down the field in left that sent Murphy to the plate adding to EKU's cushion. Minogue then sent a two RBI single through the MSU defense to score Clark and Fobbs.
The lone run proved futile, though, as EKU still held a six-run advantage.
An RBI double from Fobbs in the top of the sixth gave the Colonels an insurance run, as EKU improved its record to 9-0 in league play.
Minogue led the Colonels' offense with a 3-for-7 day at the plate and logging three RBIs. Murphy finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored for EKU.
EKU has won its last 10 games after a loss at the University of Louisville on March 12.
The Colonels will look to complete the series sweep in Sunday's finale. Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
