RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU scored 20 runs in the first game against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon, winning game one, 20-2, but dropped game two, 5-4, Saturday evening at Turkey Hughes Field.
Â
In game one,
Kyle Nowlin put the Colonels on the board in the first with a solo shot over the right-center field wall. Eastern added two more runs in the second, but the third is where things picked up.
Â
After a bases loaded walk to
Alex Holderbach scored
Shea Sullivan,
Logan Starnes singled to center field, scoring both
Luke Wurzelbacher and and
Cole Warrenfeltz. A Nowlin walk loaded the bases again, only to see
Mandy Alvarez bring Holderbach home with a single. With the bases still loaded,
Ben Fisher notched his fourth home run of the season, and the second grand slam of his career. At the end of the third, it was 11-1 EKU.
Â
Much like Friday's game, Eastern scored in nearly every inning, missing the fourth this time.
Â
Fisher led the way for the Colonels in game one, going 3-for-6 with five RBIs.
Alex Hamilton picked up his first win of the season after going five innings with five strikeouts.
Â
"Our starters gave us a good lead, and our reserves kept the energy up when they came in. It was a full team effort," said head coach
Edwin Thompson between games.
Â
The second game saw the EKU offense cool off. UM Eastern Shore took its first lead of the weekend in the first, and padded it with a run in the third and another in the fourth, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Daniel McFarland picked up his team-high second triple of the season, bringing
Kenny Hostrander home. Holderbach singled, scoring McFarland. At the end of the fourth, EKU trailed 3-2.
Â
Warrenfeltz led off the bottom of the sixth, reaching third on an error. After Hostrander walked, McFarland brought Warrenfeltz home with a ground ball to tie the game. A Holderbach single scored Hostrander, giving Eastern a 4-3 lead.
Â
The Hawks used a two-run ninth inning to take the lead, and eventually win the game, 5-4. Mike Escanilla had the key hit, a double to center field that scored Joseph NiCastro and Justin Somerville.
Â
The series finale is set to start at 12 p.m. Sunday at Turkey Hughes Field.
