Softball Wins Two On Day Two Of Eagle Classic

Box Score vs. North Dakota  |  Box Score vs. Harvard

STATESBORO, Ga. –
Eastern Kentucky picked up two wins on Saturday at the Eagle Classic hosted by Georgia Southern.  The Colonels beat North Dakota 4-1 in the first game and then knocked off Harvard 7-6 in the second game.

In game two, EKU (12-3) had a two-run lead before Harvard tied it in the bottom of the sixth.  Kayla Joyce singled to lead off the top of the seventh for Eastern, and then moved to second on a sacrifice.  It looked as if the go-ahead run might be stranded in scoring position after a fly ball for the second out.  However, Rachel Minogue singled to left center to bring home Joyce and give her squad a one-run lead.

Harvard got a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Haley Flynn closed the door by striking out the next two batters to end the game.

Eastern scored the first five runs of the game.  A three-run third inning included a two-run home run from Sarah Fobbs.  Harvard got three in the bottom half of the third and drew within 5-4 after five innings.  Amber Murray's solo home run in the top of the sixth put the Colonels in front by two.

Fobbs went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Minogue finished 2-for-4 and drove in the game-winning run.

Rhianna Rich had a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored for Harvard.

In game one against North Dakota, the Colonels turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.  With one out and runners at second and third, Fobbs drove home both with a single to right field.  Fobbs moved to second on the throw home, reached third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball to cap the inning.

Hannah Clark scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth to set the final score.

Alex Sallberg (4-1) earned the victory after allowing one run on five hits in five and one-third innings.  She walked one and struck out six.  Flynn picked her first save of the season.  She tossed the final one and two-thirds without allowing a hit or a walk.

Fobbs finished 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.  Krislyn Campos also had two hits for the Colonels.  Shelby Hard was 2-for-3 with a run scored for North Dakota.

Eastern Kentucky will conclude the Eagle Classic on Sunday with games against Harvard at 12 p.m. and Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.
