Dunn, Nowlin Power EKU To 2nd Straight OVC Series Win

Box Score

MARTIN, Tenn. –
Hunter Dunn struck out a career-best seven batters and Kyle Nowlin hit a grand slam as the Colonels beat Tennessee-Martin, 16-1, on Sunday to win their second straight Ohio Valley Conference series.

The two teams split the first two games of the weekend tilt.

"We didn't play our best baseball Friday, but our guys responded by winning a close game on Saturday and then today we executed in all three phases," Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Edwin Thompson said.  "We did a good job to find a way to win a series on the road, which isn't easy to do."

Dunn had limited the Skyhawks to just three hits and one run through five innings, but the Colonel offense had only staked him to a 3-1 lead.  That changed in the sixth when Nowlin sent a 1-2 pitch into right field that just cleared the wall for a grand slam.  The three runners on base reached without getting a hit.

Nowlin began the weekend third in the nation in home runs.  His 13th of the season was the 41st of his career.  He is now 11 away from tying the program record of 52.  He finished Sunday's game 1-for-4 with two walks, a run and four RBIs.

Dunn allowed one run on three hits over five and one-third innings while surpassing his previous best of six strike outs.

Freshman Alex Holderbach hit his first career home run in the top of the seventh.  He sent the ball over the wall in left center with a runner on base to put the Colonels (15-17, 5-7 OVC) in front 9-1.  EKU scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Cole Warrenfeltz drove in the first runs of the game with a two-out, two-strike, two-run double to left field in the second inning.

Warrenfeltz, Mandy Alvarez, Ben Fisher, Taylor Blair and Dakota Graham had two hits each for Eastern.  Warrenfeltz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Alvarez scored three times.  Holderbach finished 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs and three driven in.  EKU totaled 14 walks, with five players registering two each.

"We took advantage of the free bases today and put the ball in play when we needed to," said Thompson.

UT Martin's lone run came on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Castillo in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Daniel Kerwin went 3-for-4 for the Skyhawks (8-24, 3-12 OVC).

The Colonels will host Alabama A&M on Wednesday.  First pitch at Turkey Hughes Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
