RICHMOND, Ky. – Matt Olive and
Kyle Nowlin each hit two home runs and EKU cruised to a 12-1 victory over Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Sunday at Turkey Hughes Field. The win gives the Colonels their third straight Ohio Valley Conference series victory.
EKU (17-19, 7-8 OVC) tied the game in the second and then used two 4-run innings to pull away.
Shea Sullivan's RBI double to right field in the bottom of the third gave Eastern the lead for good. Olive capped the four-run inning with a two-run home run over the wall in right field. It was his first home run of the season, but not his last in the game.
Sullivan's RBI triple in the fourth extended the lead to 6-1. Olive got a four-run fifth inning going with another two-run home run. The duo of
Cole Warrenfeltz and
Kenny Hostrander executed a double steal later in the inning. Hostrander's run put the Colonels in front 10-1.
Nowlin tacked on two more runs with solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings. He now has 15 dingers this season and 43 in his career. He is nine away from tying the EKU career record.
SIU Edwardsville (7-25, 4-14 OVC) took the early lead on Dustin Woodcock's RBI ground out in the first inning.
Eastern starter
Hunter Dunn (3-3) kept the Cougars at bay for the next four innings. He gave up just three hits and one run in five innings of work.
Five Colonels registered two or more hits each. Olive finished 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs. Nowlin had a 2-for-4 day with three runs and two RBIs.
Ben Fisher was 3-for-5 and scored a run. Warrenfeltz went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run. Sullivan had two hits in four at bats, scored once and drove in two.
Jacob Stewart had two hits for SIUE.
The Colonels will play at Marshall on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
