RICHMOND, Ky. – The reigning Ohio Valley Conference champion EKU women's golf team is eyeing a repeat performance as it heads to Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, to play in the OVC Championship, getting underway on Monday.
Â
Hampton Cove, a 54-hole facility on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, has terrain that drastically changes from one side of the property to the other. For the OVC women's championship the course will have a par of 72 with a yardage of 6,050. This is the second consecutive year that the OVC championship will be contested at Hampton Cove.
Â
The field includes: Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, SIU Edwardsville, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
Â
EKU is looking to win its third title in four years, after winning it all in 2013 and again in 2015. With a win, Eastern would be the first repeat champion since Murray State in 2009 and 2010.
Â
Competing for Eastern this year are seniors
Rachel Welker,
Becky Sharpe, and
Anna Gleixner. Along with junior
Sofie Levin and freshman
Amanda Lindahl. Levin leads the team with a 75.31 stroke average and three top-5 finishes this season.
Â
The Colonels have finished in the top-10 of all 10 events this season, including seven top-5 finishes, and two wins, at the Cardinal Classic and the Colonel Classic. At the Colonel Classic, Eastern beat OVC rivals Austin Peay, Belmont and Tennessee Tech.
Â
Eastern won the title last year, overcoming a four shot deficit on the final day thanks in part to Levin notching a final round of 68, tying her school record for lowest round. Levin took home individual medalist honors for the tournament, the sixth individual medalist in school history.Â
