RICHMOND, Ky. – Despite a determined comeback attempt from the EKU softball team, the Bruins of Belmont University held on for a 7-6 win to avoid a series sweep in Sunday's Ohio Valley Conference series finale at Gertrude Hood Field.
Belmont (15-28, 8-9 OVC) broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Jordan Spicer to take the lead and avoid the sweep.
Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth, EKU (29-10, 13-3 OVC) plated five runs to cut the Bruins' lead to one.
With the bases loaded and no outs, junior
Amber Murray sent a shot to the gap in left center to clear the bases and give the Colonels their first runs of the day, narrowing the Belmont lead to 6-3.
Freshman
Rachel Minogue got the inning going for EKU with a single through the right side of the Belmont defense. Freshman
Brittany Oldaker drew a base on balls to put two aboard for
Sarah Jackson. Jackson took the 2-2 pitch to left center, loading the bases for Murray.
Murray delivered a timely three-run double to close in on the Bruins' lead. After two outs, sophomore
Paige Murphy's two-bagger drove in Murray to trim the Belmont lead to two. With Murphy at second, senior
Sarah Fobbs took her eighth pitch of the year to the body to put two on for
Hannah Clark.
Clark's single scored Murphy as the Colonels pulled within one before a two-out walk to Minogue loaded the bases for the Colonels, but EKU could not capitalize.
The Colonels evened the score in the sixth after a deep sacrifice fly from
Krislyn Campos scored Jackson, capping six unanswered runs from EKU. Murphy singled through the left side, as Joyce rounded third and made her way to the plate. Joyce collided with the Belmont catcher who held on for the out, denying the Colonels the go-ahead run.
Spicer's single in the seventh put the Bruins back out in front, as Belmont was able to hold onto the win.
Jackson led the EKU offense on 3-for-3 from the plate, scoring two runs on the day. Murray finished 1-for-1 with a team-high three RBI.
The Colonels host Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET at Gertrude Hood Field.
