RICHMOND, Ky. – Five home runs fueled the EKU softball team in its midweek twin bill sweep of Miami (Ohio) University with scores of 5-3 and 8-2 on Tuesday at Gertrude Hood Field.
Four Colonels combined for five home runs as senior
Sarah Fobbs hit two long balls in game two to lead EKU. Fobbs' two homers tied the program's single-game home run record marking the 28th time a Colonel had homers in a contest. Junior
Krislyn Campos drilled her first career grand slam in game one, as freshmen
Brittany Oldaker and
Hannah Clark both had solo shots in Tuesday's second game.
EKU (31-10) took game one after Campos went deep with the bases loaded to plate four in the second inning, scoring the game's first runs. The grand slam marked the second of the season for the Colonels, as Clark nailed one against Northern Kentucky University (March 29).
Earlier in the inning, back-to-back singles by Fobbs and Clark put two on for EKU. Oldaker took one for the team to load the bases, as did
Sarah Jackson to push a run in for the Colonels and extend their lead to 5-0.
The Redhawks, however, (25-17) were able to put three across in the top of the third after a three-run homer from Johniann Wahl.
Miami threatened in the fifth with runners at second and third, before Clark got the putout at the plate on a fielder's choice to deny the Redhawks the run.
In Tuesday's second game, the Colonels took a 2-0 lead in exciting fashion as Fobbs and Clark delivered back-to-back solo shots in the bottom of the second.
The Redhawks responded with their only two runs of the game in the top half of the third. Wahl and Michaela Schlattman both dropped RBI singles to get Miami on the board.
Oldaker sent her solo shot in the home half of the fourth to give the Colonels the lead once again, before Fobbs' two-run blast in the fifth pushed the EKU lead back to three.
The Colonels added three runs in the bottom of the sixth after a pinch-hit single from
Brooke Harrison. Harrison swiped second to force the throw, which allowed Oldaker to cross the plate. Campos then dropped an RBI double, before sophomore
Paige Murphy landed an RBI single to extend the Colonels' lead to 8-2 and seal the win.
With Tuesday's wins, the Colonels are 11-1 at home this season.
Fobbs went 3-of-6 over the set with three RBI, while Campos led the Colonels with five RBI on the day.
Junior
Alex Sallberg struck out three while allowing only two hits in two and one-thirds innings on the rubber in a relief effort in game one to pick up her seventh save of the season.
Senior
Hayley Flynn tallied her 21st win of the season after earning the decision in both games. Flynn tossed eight innings, striking out nine batters on the day.
EKU returns to Gertrude Hood Field on Saturday for an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State University. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
