RICHMOND, Ky. – The EKU softball team will host doubleheaders against Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Tennessee at Martin this weekend at Gertrude Hood Field.
EKU (31-10, 13-3 OVC) will take on SEMO in Saturday's doubleheader before squaring off against UT Martin on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET both days.
The Colonels enter the weekend second in the league standings behind only Jacksonville State. EKU continues its best start in the program's 24-year history.
Sophomore
Paige Murphy leads the team, hitting .402 on the season and ranks atop the conference in the category. Murphy's 36 runs scored also leads the conference. The Louisville, Kentucky native also ranks third in the OVC with a .490 on-base percentage.
The Colonels rank second in the league in batting average (.304), slugging percentage (.445), on-base percentage (.369), runs scored (215), hits (338) and runs batted in (174).
EKU's efficiency on the defensive side has been imperative as well. The Colonels' 2.19 earned-run average is a conference best. EKU also leads the league in opposing batting average (.230) and strikeouts (300).
Senior
Hayley Flynn has compiled 198 strikeouts on the season, along with 21 wins. Flynn leads the OVC in both categories and is 10th in the nation in strikeouts and third in wins. Junior
Alex Sallberg's poise has helped the Colonels time and time again. Sallberg ranks third in the nation with seven saves. Sallberg broke the previous program record earlier this season.
SEMO (12-27, 6-11 OVC) enters Saturday's doubleheader after losing its last five contests including getting swept on the road at UT Martin last weekend.
Clarie Wernig's .313 average leads the Redhawk offense while Madeline Krumrey has tossed a team-high 115.0 innings and compiled a 5-10 record.
UT Martin (26-18, 10-7 OVC) has won its last four including last weekend's three-game sweep against SEMO. The Skyhawks also defeated Southeastern Conference opponent Ole Miss, 9-6, in Oxford.
Carly Gonzales leads the Skyhawk offense with a .386 average at the plate. The junior leads the conference in walks (28) and on-base percentage (.500).
