OXFORD, Ala. – After a scoreless four innings, a big fifth inning for Jacksonville State University lifted the Gamecocks to a 12-0 win over the EKU softball team in Friday's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament matchup at Choccolocco Park.
EKU (37-16) senior pitcher
Hayley Flynn struck out the first seven batters she faced, finishing with 10 strikeouts in four innings of work.
The Colonels' offense put two runners aboard in the second inning on back-to-back hits from freshmen
Hannah Clark and
Brittany Oldaker, but EKU was unable to muster any runs.
After a single from JSU's Whitney Gillespie, the Gamecocks added two base runners with two outs to load the bases in the fourth. However, Flynn and Colonels' defense halted the threat to retire the side and keep JSU scoreless.
However, in the fifth the Gamecocks offense used 10 hits on their way to a 12-run inning and the win.
Oldaker, Clark and
Paige Murphy each had one hit for the Colonels.
EKU will take on the winner of No. 2 Eastern Illinois and No. 4 seed Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Saturday in an elimination game. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
