PHOENIX, Ariz. – The EKU volleyball team returns to action on Friday, as it takes on the Lopes of Grand Canyon University at 10 p.m. ET in the opening match of the Grand Canyon University Tournament.
EKU (0-3) will square off against the host on Friday, before taking on California State University--Fullerton and Eastern Washington University on Saturday. Game times are set for 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.
The Colonels stood tall last weekend at the Duke Invitational, as EKU pushed Duke and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to five sets in consecutive matches. Louisiana State University defeated the Colonels 3-0 in the season opener.
Freshman setter
Rachel Woody had a breakout weekend for the Colonels, finishing one kill shy of three straight triple-doubles. Woody compiled 33 kills, 56 assists, and 38 digs. The Murrieta, California native currently leads the nation in triple-doubles.
Junior outside hitter Natalie Tardy leads the Lopes' offense after logging 42 kills and helping GCU to a 2-1 record at the Air Force Academy Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Lopes upended Ohio Valley Conference opponent, Jacksonville State University, 3-0, and took down Air Force Academy after losing in their season opener to Montana State on Friday.
Cal State Fullerton (2-2) dropped its last two after opening the season with wins over Mississippi Valley State and South Carolina State. Sophomore Madeline Schneider paces the Titan offense, averaging 4.00 kills-per-set through the team's first four matches.
Meanwhile, Eastern Washington arrives in Phoenix with a 1-2 mark on the year. On opening weekend, the Eagles picked up a win over Lamar University before losing in straight sets to Kansas and Mississippi State.
