Offensive Efficiency Keys Saturday Sweep at Akron

AKRON, Ohio –
 The EKU volleyball team posted consecutive season highs in hitting percentage in Saturday's determined sweep of the University of Akron and Canisius College at the Akron Invitational.
 
EKU hit .311 in the win over Akron to open the day and recorded a new season best .344 in a commanding three-set win over Canisius. The Colonels hit .242 in their first match of the event on Friday which was a previous season-high.
 
The Colonels dropped the first to Akron, but never looked back as they won six consecutive sets to complete the sweep. EKU took Saturday's first match over the Zips by scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 25-18 before making quick work of the Griffins, winning 25-11, 25-19, and 25-20.
 
Junior Nikki Drost piloted the Colonel offense, finishing the day with 29 kills for an average of 4.14 kills-per-set. Drost recorded a career-high 19 digs against Akron and has compiled 10 or more kills in each of the last three matches.
 
Junior Mallory Maxwell led the defensive effort for the Colonels, logging 35 digs in Saturday's wins. Sophomore Cassie Knutson added 22 kills, seven assists, and seven digs for EKU. Drost and freshman Rachel Woody were named to the all-tournament team. 
 
The Colonels play three matches at next weekend's Red Flash Classic hosted by Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania in their final weekend of non-conference action.
 
EKU will play Saint Francis at 7 p.m. on Friday, before taking on Iona College and the United States Naval Academy on Saturday.
