Box Score (PDF)

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– Senior Cassie Smith scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to lift the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team past host Charleston Southern, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field.

It is EKU's (3-2-0) third straight win and second straight road victory.

Eastern had not played in eight days, as its match at The Citadel on Friday was canceled due to Hurricane Hermine; however, the Colonels showed little rust. Junior Emmi Carroll got EKU rolling with a goal off a free kick in the 27th minute. It was her second score of the young season.

The match was decided, however, in a wild second half that featured four goals. Eastern extended its lead in the 51st minute on a Jordan Foster goal. The junior took a headed pass from Carroll at midfield to net her second goal on the year.

CSU cut into the EKU lead in the 62nd minute with a goal from Lydia Frierson.

In the 78th minute, Charleston Southern tied to match when Emilie Gilbert rebounded a saved shot for the equalizer.

Seventy-one seconds later, though, Smith scored on a rebound of her own for the decisive goal of the day. It was the second goal of the year for Smith and 16th of her career. The veteran forward is now one goal shy of tying the EKU career record.

"This was the weirdest weekend," head coach Nick Flohre said. "I think losing the game Friday to weather and breaking our routine hurt us. While we will always be happy with a win, I don't think anyone in our program would say we played well. We have to give credit to the players for grinding out a win when things weren't working for us. We now have to take advantage of our extra training time this week and get ready for next weekend."

Charleston Southern (2-3-0) came into the match having won two its last three, including shutouts against Jacksonville and North Florida.

EKU goalkeeper Anna Hall continued her hot streak with nine saves. The junior has given up only two goals in the Colonels' last three matches.

Smith and Foster led Eastern on the day with three shots apiece.

The Colonels return home to face Western Carolina on September 11. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field.
